Clay County authorities are investigating the possible drowning death of a 19-month-old girl whose body was found in a pond at a residence outside Holt.
The incident was reported just after 10 p.m. Wednesday. Relatives were performing CPR on the child when fire crews arrived, said Fire Chief Robert Looper of the Holt Community Fire Protection District.
They rushed the child to Liberty Hospital, but efforts to revive her were unsuccessful.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident but released few details, including the specific location of the residence.
Relatives told fire officials that the child had been unaccounted for at least 30 minutes before she was located.
Investigators have questioned several people, and they are awaiting the results of an autopsy.
