Park Hill School District
Dancers compete: Dance teams from Park Hill and Park Hill South high schools won honors in UDA Elite Dance Camp competition this summer.
Competing in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the Park Hill South dance team earned first place in home routine, a superior trophy for ribbon point accumulation, a spirit stick for respectfulness, a superior spirit stick and the team leadership award.
At the University of Missouri camp in July, the Park Hill High School team earned superior ratings in home and team routines, second place in home routine, a spirit stick, a superior spirit stick and the team leadership award.
Named as All-American Dancers from Park Hill South were seniors Hannah Leibee, Sydney Lowe, Brady Smith and Hannah Winkler and junior Madi Guerra.
Park Hill High School dancers earning the All-American distinction were seniors Olivia Daley, Jordan Elder and Olivia Woods and junior Kennedea Caldwell.
Both teams qualified to compete at the National Dance Team Championship in Orlando, Fla., in January.
North Kansas City High School
Rocket scientist: Emily Schmidtlein is one of three national winners in the Reach for the Stars National Rocket Competition.
Winners were chosen based on how close their rockets landed to a target. Emily will be awarded a Space Shuttle Challenger commemorative coin and a certificate signed by astronaut Jon McBride, a National Aeronautics and Space Administration pilot.
In October, the national winners will attend Space Camp and launch rockets from the Homer Hickam Field at the United States Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala. They also will experience astronaut simulations and view space artifacts.
South Valley Middle School
Winning essayist: Mackensi Killbreth won the Middle School Division of the 2015 Essay Contest sponsored by the Missouri Alliance for Arts Education.
Students wrote on the influence of music, visual art, dance or drama in their lives and the importance of arts in the schools.
