Educator excels: Erica Barrows has been nominated for a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
The nationwide award is given to teachers of math, science and computer science in kindergarten through 12th grade by the U.S. Government. Teachers are chosen based on their instruction in the classroom and contributions to their profession.

Middle-school students recognized: Students in the Liberty School District earned awards for academic improvement during fall semester.
Jesse Robinson at Discovery Middle School, Laila Troxler at Heritage Middle School, Katie Echaves at Liberty Middle School and Jaycek Weston at South Valley Middle School were the honorees.
Kiwanis club members Deb Jones and Sandy Schwartz and school district representative Julie Moore presented the awards.
Honors graduates: Northland students graduated with honors and baccalaureate degrees on the campus in Parkville.
Achieving the highest honor — summa cum laude, which requires at least a 3.9 grade-point average, or GPA — were Alexandria Donovan of Liberty; Daniel Duncan of Excelsior Springs, Rebecca Fenner of Parkville, Catherine Gann of Excelsior Springs, Julie Murphy of Parkville, Morgan Severson of Kansas City, North; Zachary Sexton of Liberty; Austin Thomas of Liberty; Emma Turner of Liberty; and Grant Williams of Kansas City, North.
Magna cum laude graduates (3.7-3.9 GPA) were Cecelia Britz of Kansas City, North; Nathan Edwards of Parkville; Chidi Ekebere of Parkville; Mark Fletcher of Riverside; Alexis Fry of Gladstone; Afaq Muradzade of Kansas City, North; Jesse Rodriquez of Dearborn; and Sinjin Wright of Parkville.
Graduating cum laude (3.5-3.7 GPA) were Natalie Berry of Platte Woods; Dilon Schmidt of Kansas City, North; and Angela Schweedler of Excelsior Springs.
