Girls Leadership Program: Northland high school students are among those selected citywide to participate in a year-long program to develop leadership and public service skills.
Participants include Katherine Benhardt from Liberty High School; Phoenix Smith, Madlin Tutu and Jasmine Werninger from Oak Park; Hannah Wood from Platte County R-3; Jordyn Beard from Smithville High School; and Clare Cunningham, Tina Pham, Fatma Said, Alexis Theoharidis and Milkise Yassin from Staley.
Students will learn about the importance of community service, grant-making, budgeting, team building and program evaluation.
National Merit Scholarships
Winners announced: Two Northland students have been awarded scholarships financed by colleges and universities.
Recipients are chosen from among the National Merit Finalists who will attend the school.
Awarded scholarships are Dylan P. Lloyd, a graduate of Oak Park High School, from the University of Oklahoma; and Sarah Komar, a graduate of Park Hill South High School, from the University of Arkansas.
North Kansas City School District
Homegrown educators: Northwest Missouri State University and the school district are partnering to help graduates become teachers in the district where they grew up.
Through the A+ program, students can earn an associate degree — the first two years of college — at a community college tuition-free. They can then finish the last two years of college and earn a bachelor’s degree at the Northwest location in the Northland Innovation Campus at 6889 N. Oak Trafficway in Gladstone.
While students are earning the degrees, they can work for district schools.
After graduating, the new teachers begin teaching in district schools.
Currently, 15 students are participating in the “Grow Your Own” program. Classes started this month on the campus in Gladstone.
