Gladstone’s Strive to Thrive Program

Enrollment has begun for a “friendly fitness program” offered by Gladstone Parks and Recreation.

The four-week Strive to Thrive encourages healthy lifestyle habits and a friendly competition between city and community-formed teams.

Businesses, civic organizations, churches and other groups are invited to register teams. Members will record fitness minutes and healthy eating habits. Gladstone Parks and Recreation will provide email tips, suggestions and information on healthy lifestyles.

The two top teams will be chosen according to number of walking minutes and the highest average of fruit and vegetable consumption. Winners will be announced at the Scarecrow 5K Run on Oct. 5.

Enrollment closes Aug. 25. The challenge is Aug. 31-Sept. 27.

Gladstone arts

Gladstone residents are invited to give their input on the future of arts and entertainment in the city during an open meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Gladstone City Hall, 7010 N. Holmes Road.

The city is developing a plan for arts and entertainment with support from Webb Management Services, a provider of cultural and project planning services.

Duncan Webb will give an overview of the planning process and lead discussion on Gladstone’s existing programs and potential opportunities.

Clay County immunizations

The Clay County Public Health Department has received a limited amount of immunization supplies for adolescents and young adults ages 11-26. Immunizations are for Tdap (Whooping Cough/Pertussis Booster), meningococcal and HPV vaccines The cost is $20.

The immunizations were made possible through the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services under the 317 program, a federal program that fills the gap for those not eligible for the Vaccine for Children (VFC) program.

To make an appointment and find out if someone is eligible for the 317 or VFC programs call 816-595-5355. The Clay County Health Center is at 800 Haines Drive in Liberty.

Golf classic Aug. 21

Register now for the 21st annual Gladstone Theatre in the Park Golf Classic on Aug. 21 at Paradise Pointe Golf Course at Smithville Lake.

The grand prize is a 2014 Buick.

Fees are $110 per person or $205 per twosome. Proceeds go toward Gladstone Theatre in the Park productions. Cash prizes will be awarded for all flights.

The grand prize Buick is sponsored by Mike Steffens of Randy Reed Pontiac-Buick-GMC. The registration deadline is Aug. 13. Call 816-423-4091 for information. Register at the Gladstone City Hall, 7010 N. Holmes Road; or the Gladstone Community Center, 6901 N. Holmes.

Chamber bowling event

Bowlers are invited to bowl in Way Back Wednesday, a fund-raising event for the Liberty Area Chamber of Commerce.

The bowl-a-rama will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 20 at Retro Bowl, 906 W. Liberty Drive in Liberty.

Fees are $30 per person or $150 for a team of five and include three games of cosmic bowling, shoes, appetizers and drinks.

Prizes will be given for best dressed team, strikes and highest score. Sponsorships are available.
