Harrah’s casino to open new steakhouse

Harrah’s North Kansas City Hotel & Casino wants to attract diners who would typically head to restaurants in Zona Rosa or the Country Club Plaza.
So it is spending more than $3 million converting the former Mike Garozzo & Charlie Gitto's Italian Restaurant, as well as the former Diamond VIP lounge, to the new ’37 Steak, a 16,000-square-foot restaurant, bar and private dining area. A soft opening is planned for June 30 at Harrah’s, One Riverboat Drive in North Kansas City.
’37 Steak will offer a “modern chef-driven approach to American cuisine,” said William Dworzan, executive chef for Harrah’s North Kansas City Casino & Hotel.
“Bar Fare” will include spicy candied bacon, Panko-Parmesan crispy shrimp, grilled mac-and-cheese sandwich (with tomato soup shooters), and deviled eggs (king crab-stuffed eggs with cayenne pepper). Crafted cocktails will include the Pisco Sour (Pisco brandy, lime juice, simple syrup, egg white and bitters) and the Her-Hattan (Jim Beam honey bourbon, sweet vermouth, orange bitters and cherry).
It also will have a custom ice machine and a wide range of glassware to fit specific drinks, as well as 100 bottled wines and about 20 wines-by-the-glass, and a large variety of craft beers.
The dinner menu will include a “chilled seafood tower” for two to four people with lobster, shrimp, oysters and king crab leg, appetizers like baked escargot and char-broiled oysters, soups and salads, steaks, and seafood like Australian Barramundi. ’37 specialties will include “Chicken + Blue Crab Wellington,” and apple cider pork chops.
John Woods, who has been with Harrah’s North Kansas City since 2005, is the executive chef of ’37 Steak.
The restaurant also will have a large open bar with seating for 85 people, and it will have three private dining areas — one seating up to eight, one seating up to 18, and one seating up to 30.
Harrah’s North Kansas City’s The Range Steakhouse, which opened in 1998, is scheduled to close on June 22 and the 8,000-square-foot space will be revamped for Harrah’s new Diamond VIP lounge.
New in the West Bottoms
Longtime downtown lounge, The Ship, has been resurrected in the West Bottoms.
According to city directories, The Ship first docked at 411 E. 10th St. from the late 1930s through the early 1990s. When it shut down, a West Bottoms’ landlord, Adam Jones, purchased the decor and kept the pieces in storage, planning to one day give them another public display.
A decade ago, Jones told his friends, Bob Asher and Josh Mobley, about the items. Asher and Mobley decided to bring The Ship back in one of Jones’ West Bottom buildings at 1217 Union Ave.
“It was kind of a hobby. We are all good friends and I would work on it whenever my wife would let me have a little money,” Asher said. “The interior looks like a steamship with portal windows, rivets.”
By 2010, the friends were renting the space out for private events.
This year they set out to make it a more public venue. In late May they began opening it up as a lounge on Thursday nights. Now The Ship is open from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday, featuring live jazz on Thursday.
“We’re not looking to compete with Westport,” Asher said. “We’re just having a good time down in the West Bottoms.”
Burlington to Grandview
Burlington, a national discount price retailer, is coming to Grandview.
The company said it will open a 60,000-square-foot store in the spring of 2015 in the new Truman’s Marketplace.
The stores offer “style for less,” up to 65 percent off department store prices on ladies’ dresses, suits, sportswear, juniors, accessories, menswear, family footwear, children’s clothing and more.
RED Legacy, developers of Truman’s Marketplace, declined to comment on the Burlington store.
Truman’s Marketplace will be the redevelopment of the 554,000-square-foot Truman Corners Shopping Center. The 72-acre site, at Blue Ridge Boulevard and Interstate 49, is on what was once the boyhood farm of the nation’s 33rd president.
Truman’s Marketplace is scheduled to debut in spring 2015 with a major brand grocery, specialty stores, apparel shops, new restaurants, and retailers selling arts and crafts and pet supplies.
