Los Corrals restaurant, which was founded downtown in 1949, is expanding.
Stephen Neal purchased the Mexican restaurant, at 408 W. Ninth St., two years ago.
Now he’s taken over a space in the Meadowbrook Village Shopping Center, 6024 N.E. Antioch Road, Suite B, in Gladstone. He’s remodeling the spot and hopes to reopen it as a Los Corrals in time for Cinco de Mayo celebrations on May 5.
“It seems like a good fit for us,” Neal said. “We have a lot of customers from that area.”
Los Corrals is known for its housemade tortilla chips. It also sells its hot and mild sauces in area grocery stores.
The Gladstone space formerly housed Tanner’s Bar Grill and then Diego’s Bar Grill.
Meadowbrook Village Shopping Center is scheduled to be remodeled starting in June, including new landscaping and new lighting. The owners hope that will bring in other new restaurant and retail tenants.
“It’s a 40-year-old center and you need to bring up those standards to today’s standards with amenities that consumers are looking for,” said Andrew Osman, broker for ARO Real Estate in Overland Park, owner of Meadowbrook.Independence Center adds retailers, food court operations
Tilly’s, an “action sports” retailer selling surf and skate clothing, shoes and accessories, is scheduled to open in the center in May. It also has a store in Leawood.
Footlocker has expanded, adding a House of Hoops by Footlocker store next door. House of Hoops specializes in Nike footwear.
Two new sister food court concepts, Teriyaki Grill and Fenway’s Steakburger, also recently opened.
Teriyaki Grill is offering Japanese cuisine and Fenway’s is, of course, specializing in steakburgers. But Fenway’s also offers fish sandwiches, tenderloins, onion rings, fried mushrooms, entree salads and other items.
The Teriyaki Grill/Fenway’s Steakburgers partnership, which is based in Independence, also hopes to open the two new food court concepts in other Simon-owned malls across the country.
Independence Center, at 18801 E. 39th St. in Independence, has more than 130 tenants.Quick bite
Jose Pepper’s Border Grill Cantina will open in the former The Café at Briarcliff Village.
The local restaurant chain is remodeling the building at 4125 N. Mulberry Drive in the Northland shopping center. An opening date wasn’t available.
Jose Pepper’s has nine restaurants in the metro, as well as two locations in Wichita and one in Topeka.
The Cafe at Briarcliff Village, a breakfast, lunch and dinner operation, was an original tenant of Briarcliff Village, opening in early 2007. It closed in late 2013.
•Why did the Golden Corral restaurant and Berbiglia close on Church Road?
Bob McDevitt, spokesman for Golden Corral, said the restaurant was closed on Feb. 13 by the franchisee for a combination of reasons: “The lease was due to expire and a remodel was required on the existing building. The amount of investment needed to upgrade the building to make extending the lease viable was not warranted based on the business that the restaurant was generating. Golden Corral is disappointed to have left the community but there is a Golden Corral in Tiffany Springs on Skyview Avenue.”
Berbiglia Wine Spirits closed its Church Road store in late January. Berbiglia officials did not return return phone calls. The building was sold to Liberty Hospital for an urgent care center and occupational medicine clinic scheduled to open in early October.
•When is Pizza Ranch opening in Independence?
The restaurant is scheduled to open April 28 at 4660 Bass Pro Drive, Independence. There also are area Pizza Ranch locations in Kansas City, North, and Liberty. Plans to add a Kansas City, Kan., restaurant have been dropped for now.
The restaurants specialize in pizza and chicken.
