The medical records of 238 Children’s Mercy Hospital patients were stolen from the trunk of an employee’s locked vehicle, officials acknowledged Wednesday.
The documents were locked inside a hard-sided case but did not include patients’ addresses, Social Security numbers or family financial information. The hospital has notified those families affected by the theft, hospital officials said in a written statement.
“We are very sensitive to these families’ concerns and have apologized to them,” the statement said. “We are working to take all practicable steps to resolve this situation, including making identity protection services available to the families.”
Hospital officials said they have been able to identify, re-create and verify the patient information that was inside the stolen case.
They declined to comment further.
