Drivers on Interstate 35 in Johnson County early Friday morning should prepare for a temporary closing of the highway.
As part of a project to update seven overhead message boards that are part of the Kansas City Scout system, crews will close I-35 near 127th Street for about five minutes while the sign at that location is removed.
Prior to the closing of I-35, crews will shut down one lane of northbound I-35 at 8 p.m. One lane of southbound I-35 will close at 9 p.m. and two lanes of northbound I-35 will close at 11 p.m.
At 1 a.m. Friday, northbound and southbound I-35 will close.
Once the signboard is removed, I-35 will reopen in phases and will be fully open to traffic by 5 a.m.
The signs will be taken to another location so new internal equipment can be installed. The retrofit for each sign is expected to take about two weeks to complete, and then they will be reinstalled.
Upgrades also will affect signs at northbound U.S. 69 near 135th Street; southbound I-35 near 95th Street; northbound I-35 near 24th Street; northbound and southbound I-35 near Roe Lane; southbound Interstate 435 near 79th Street and eastbound I-435 near Mission Road.
Drivers will face similar closings when the sign near 95th is removed overnight Monday.
Crews will close one lane of southbound I-35 at 8 p.m. Monday. One lane of northbound I-35 will close an hour later. At 11 p.m., two lanes of southbound I-35 will close.
At 1 a.m. Tuesday, northbound and southbound I-35 will close for about five minutes. The routes will reopen in phases, and will be completely open to traffic by 5 a.m.
