A dog died Thursday morning in a fire that started in the kitchen of an Overland Park house.
About 10:30 a.m. Thursday, someone saw smoke coming from a house in the 8400 block of West 71st Street and called 911.
Firefighters arrived and determined that the residents were not home, but they found the dog in a front bedroom.
The fire was brought under control after about 20 minutes.

Fire damage was contained to the kitchen and living room, but there was significant smoke damage throughout the house, according to the Overland Park Fire Department.
