A driver involved in a fiery wreck Wednesday morning along Interstate 35 in Lenexa managed to walk away virtually unscathed, according to police.
Lenexa police on Wednesday afternoon released video of the crash, which shows a Chevrolet Impala leaving the road and knocking out an electrical utility box before launching into the air and flipping over.
The destruction of the utility box let out a flash of electricity. Fire burst from the car as it landed upside down.
The wreck occurred about 10:45 a.m., said Officer Dan Friesen, a spokesman for the Lenexa Police Department. The Chevrolet was traveling south on U.S. 69 at a point where the highway splits from I-35 when, for unknown reasons, the car left the road and hit the utility box.
The driver, from Kansas City, Kan., walked away from the accident uninjured. Police found no evidence of impairment or distracted driving.
“Nothing like that,” Friesen said. “We really don’t have a solid explanation as to what happened. But it could have been a lot worse.”
After the wreck, crews from Kansas City Power & Light arrived to repair the equipment.
