An early morning water main break at City Market sent water — as well as mud and debris — spilling through the entrance of the market Wednesday.
City Market director of marketing and events Sue Patterson said a property manager received a call about the break after 4 a.m. and found the market entrance at Fifth and Walnut streets under inches of water. By late Wednesday morning, city employees were working to preserve brick and fix the issue as the market remained opened.
“It’s a pretty garden-variety water main break during this time of the year with the heat,” Patterson said.
Patterson said water service was shut down to businesses in the north side of the market, but she expected it would return by 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Never miss a local story.
The entrance to City Market would be restored by Friday evening, she said.
Most City Market businesses were open, she said, but Bo Lings and Winslow’s BBQ were closed Wednesday.
