A Basehor couple and their infant daughter were killed Sunday afternoon in a crash as they headed home from a Father’s Day outing to the Topeka Zoo.
Travis Askew, 35, his wife, Ashley Askew, 27, and their 6-month-old daughter, Haley, were killed in the Sunday afternoon wreck on U.S. 24 in Jefferson County, Kan.
Two other daughters, 5-year-old Linda, known as L.J., and 3-year-old Lilly, were injured. The driver of the other vehicle, 56-year-old Ronald D. Heston of Oskaloosa, died.
Relatives said that the Askews had spent the day at the zoo and were driving home when the wreck occurred about 3:20 p.m. Sunday.
Never miss a local story.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Heston was driving his pickup truck west on U.S. 24 when he left the road. He steered back onto the road and into the eastbound lanes, where his truck hit the minivan driven by Travis Askew.
The Askews had moved to Kansas about a year ago from Alabama, family members said Monday.
Travis Askew worked as an equipment operator for the Kansas Department of Transportation.
His brother Tony Askew said the two little girls remained hospitalized Monday but were doing better and are expected to survive.
Tony Askew’s wife, Cindy Askew, said the couple were dedicated parents and devoted Christians.
