Chimney collapses into Merriam apartment building

A mother and her child suffered minor injuries, and the 18-unit building was evacuated.

A chimney collapsed into a Merriam apartment building Saturday afternoon, leaving a mother and her child with minor injuries.

Authorities said the structure gave way at the Georgetown Apartments at about 5 p.m. Saturday. The collapse damaged three floors of the building in the 7200 block of Eby Drive.

The mother and daughter were hurt by falling ceiling debris. No other injuries were reported.

The collapsed forced the evacuation of the 18-unit building. About 24 people were relocated until inspectors evaluate the building’s safety. Merriam was investigating the collapse Saturday night.
