Gianna Bonino, 2, raised a flower into the air while wandering through a sea of American flags with her brother Michael Bonino, 4, Friday morning at the Flags 4 Freedom, a community-driven flag display in downtown Merriam. The two youngsters were accompanied by their grandparents, Bill and Kathy Coenen, all of Lenexa. This is the ninth year for the event that will include a Fourth of July celebration beginning at 11:30 a.m. Friday. Plenty of food and icecream will be available, to go along with a concert.

Carnival workers disassembled the Pink Dragon ride Thursday in Parkville. The Main Street Parkville Association announced that the carnival portion of it's Fourth of July Celebration will not operate after the rides, operated by Bluff City Shows of Fisk, Mo., failed to pass safety inspections. An inflatable village will take the carnival's place.

Preparations for the KC Riverfest were underway Thursday at Berkley Riverfront Park where Chris Smedley of SECT Theater Supply worked to ready the Port Authority Stage. The festival runs from 4 pm to 11 pm on Friday, July 4th, and boasts the largest fireworks show in the Midwest as well as two stages of music, kids activities, and many food vendors.
