Local high schools dominate Kansas rankings for college readiness

In the newest U.S. News World Report rankings of the nation’s top high schools, the Kansas college readiness list is heavy at the top with local schools.

Sumner Academy in Kansas City, Kan., is No. 1 with a score of 74.1.

Rounding out the top five are Blue Valley Southwest with a score of 49.9, Blue Valley North at 47.1, Blue Valley High at 44.8 and Blue Valley Northwest at 40.1.

The scores were based on the percentages of high school seniors who passed International Baccalaureate exams. The maximum college readiness index value was 100.0.

In Missouri, Park Hill High School came in fifth in college readiness with a score of 38.7, followed by Park Hill South in ninth with a score of 33.5 and Lincoln Preparatory Academy in 11th at 31.6.

On a national level, Kansas schools were awarded the third highest rate of U.S. News bronze medals with 29.4 percent. That accolade measures commendable performance on state tests.

Missouri schools ranked eighth on the list, with 26.6 percent of schools receiving bronze medals.
