A Richmond woman and her son were killed early Sunday when a fire swept through their residence in Richmond, according to fire officials.

The victims were identified as Tonya Hood, 39, and Chad Evans, 17. Autopsies will be performed to determine the cause of deaths.

The blaze in the 100 block of West Franklin Street was reported at 8:40 a.m. Arriving fire crews encountered heavy smoke pouring from a downstairs apartment and light smoke coming from an upstairs unit. A person already had escaped from the upstairs unit.

Fire crews found Hood and her son in the downstairs unit. Both died at the scene. The cause of the fire had not been determined Monday. Damage estimates were not available.

The Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office is assisting Richmond authorities with the investigation.
