Mother is charged after 5-year-old boy was home alone at time of fire

Yasmeen M. Walker of Kansas City was charged with child endangerment after a small fire damaged the second floor of a residence in the 2000 block of Park Tower Drive. The boy said he was home alone long enough to watch three television programs.

Jackson County authorities have accused a 34-year-old woman of child endangerment, saying she left her 5-year-old son home alone before their residence caught fire.

Yasmeen M. Walker of Kansas City was charged after a small fire Thursday damaged the second floor of the residence in the 2000 block of Park Tower Drive. Fire crews discovered the child home alone, according to court records.

A neighbor told investigators she saw Walker driving up the hill. A short time later, the woman said, she looked out the window and saw the child standing naked in the doorway of his residence.

The woman told the child to go back inside, but the boy replied, “I can’t. It’s a fire,” according to court records.

The woman and a friend retrieved the boy and noticed fire coming from “somewhere upstairs.”

She gave the boy clothes. The boy later told a worker with the Missouri Children’s Division that his mother left him “to go get somebody or something,” according to court records.

The boy said the fire was started by candles in his mother’s room. He also said he was home alone long enough to watch three television programs, including an episode of “SpongeBob SquarePants,” court records said.
