Greenwood residents will decide April 8 if the incumbent mayor gets a third term or is upset by a political newcomer.
Mayor Marvin Megee is opposed by Scott Hogsett.
The other contested Greenwood race has Mike Harrell and David Owens running for a one-year term in Ward 1.
When one of the aldermen resigned early, Hogsett applied for appointment to that office, but wasn't selected.
Hogsett said he thinks the aldermen are doing a good job, but Megee has served long enough with two terms.
He said he wants to improve the city’s website to post its budget, future projects and other information, which should include the city’s ordinances.
Both candidates agreed the city must add more businesses to improve its tax base and be able to provide services to residents.
Hogsett pointed out controversies during Megee's administration: mayoral pardons and lawsuits involving fired police personnel and age discrimination. Two lawsuits were settled.
Megee said he gave the pardons because of police errors he believed could have resulted in lawsuits against the city.
He said the lawsuits were without merit, noting that the Board of Aldermen votes on dismissals. Greenwood’s insurer settled because it was cheaper than defending the city in court, he added.
Megee said the city was nearly broke when he and a new set of aldermen took office in 2010.
During his tenure, the Board of Aldermen while not agreeing on all issues, has at least been respectful and working together, Megee said.
Greenwood now has a balanced annual budget of about $3 million, Megee said, with a reserve averaging $2.5 million.
A settlement from a lawsuit against a nearby rock quarry allowed the city to pay off debt and create the cash reserve.MARVIN MEGEE
