“Blurred Lines” singer Robin Thicke and his wife, actress Paula Patton, have separated after nearly nine years of marriage, the couple announced on Monday.
"We will always love each other and be best friends, however, we have mutually decided to separate at this time," they said in a joint statement to People magazine.
Thicke, 36, and Patton, 38, met nearly 22 years ago when they were teenagers. They married in 2005 and had a son, Julian, in April 2010.
Thicke reportedly canceled a Florida stop on his “Blurred Lines” tour on Saturday. A source told Yahoo News that he had been having vocal issues “but also wanted to come back to Los Angeles to be with his son and family while the family made the final decision to go forward with the announcement of the separation.”
The couple started answering a lot of questions about their relationship after the racy “Blurred Lines” video and his controversial appearance with Miley Cyrus at the VMAs last year. (Recall the twerking debacle?)
“I knew she was special the night I met her. I was only 14, but she was already the most special girl,” Thicke said of his wife last fall in Star magazine.
“As a relationship progresses, you fall in love again in so many deeper ways. You realize that you need each other and you can’t live without each other.”
Rumors about the status of their marriage had dogged the couple in recent months, heating up after the VMAs when one woman claimed that she kissed Thicke at an after-party.
