A Kansas City, Kan., man was shot Thursday morning in an exchange of gunfire with thieves who tried to steal his warming-up car, police said.

The incident occurred in the 7400 block of Oakland Avenue about 7:30 a.m. Thursday. The victim had started his car and gone back inside when he saw that his car was being taken. He went outside to confront the thieves. After exchanging words, the homeowner and suspects exchanged shots. The homeowner suffered a non-life threatening injury and was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.

The two suspects fled on foot. A police dog tracked them to a nearby apartment complex where officers followed footprints in the snow to a building. Two people matching the description of the suspects were taken into custody as persons of interest in the case.
