There’s nothing like Valentine’s Day to get people thinking about tying the knot, and that’s what a non-profit agency in Peculiar is counting on.

Caring Hearts of Peculiar, formerly the United Way agency there, is raising money by offering Valentine’s Day weddings for $500 in the city’s historic Cornerstone Chapel.

“This is kind of a strange, different idea,” said Larry Dobson, president of Caring Hearts. “It’s so difficult to raise funds. Something unique and different is what we were looking for.”

The package includes 30 minutes with a licensed minister — Baptist and Methodist ministers serve on the Caring Hearts board — traditional wedding music, photography a reception with refreshments, wine and two keepsake wine glasses. A bouquet is available, too.

The lovebirds need to provide the marriage license, and they can bring up to 10 guests. Weddings can be scheduled between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Feb. 14, a Friday. If it snows too much, the ceremonies will take place the following Monday.

Caring Hearts funds a number of agencies in Peculiar, inclulding a thrift store, food pantry, Christmas store, two Boy Scout troops, Hope Haven and the Cass County Dental Clinic.

Anyone who wants to get hitched this way needs to contact Dobson at 816-331-2888 by Feb. 4 or 5.
