A former Lansing Correctional Facility corrections officer pleaded “no contest” Wednesday to illegally having sex with an inmate.
Melinda Trusty, 47, admitted during a 2012 interview with prison investigators that she had sex with inmate Nathan M. Cunningham in a prison clinic restroom, Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson said in a written statement.
She had come under suspicion when staffers noticed that letters written to Cunningham appeared to be coming from a prison employee. Cunningham worked in the clinic from June to September 2012.
Cunningham is serving long sentences from Reno County for aggravated battery, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, aggravated burglary, aggravated criminal threat, aggravated assault and obstructing the legal process. He is eligible for release in November 2024, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections.
