NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says the league could consider eliminating extra points following touchdowns.
Goodell, according to an interview on NFL.com
, said there is a proposal to eliminate extra-point kicks and automatically make touchdowns worth seven instead of six points. Teams would have the option to run or pass for an additional point after touchdowns, but they would only get six for the touchdown if the try fails.
“There’s one proposal in particular that I’ve heard about,” Goodell said. “It’s automatic that you get seven points when you score a touchdown, but you could potentially go for an eighth point, either by running or passing the ball, so if you fail, you go back to six.”
Goodell said there were only five missed extra points out of 1,200-some attempts this season.
“The extra point is almost automatic,” Goodell said. “… so it’s a very small fraction of the play, and you want to add excitement with every play.”
