A man who was in a shootout with Kansas City police on Dec. 19 and who died later in a hospital killed himself, police said Friday, citing autopsy results.
Joel D. Bravard, 26, was found shot in the head inside a house after he allegedly shot a police officer in the leg when officers went to question him. Bravard died four days later.
It had not been immediately clear whether Barvard’s wound had come from a police bullet or his own. Citing a medical examiner’s report, police said Friday the cause of death had been ruled a suicide.
The full autopsy report was not immediately available.
Police had been looking for Bravard on a Platte County warrant for failure to appear in a case involving stolen property.
They also wanted to question him in the Nov. 21 death of 19-year-old Michelle L. Russell, who was shot at a Northland motel. Her body was found hours later in a car near Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence.
Officers believed Bravard to be in a house in the 500 block of North Lawndale Avenue. Bravard allegedly started shooting at the tactical officers, and they returned fire. The situation became a standoff that lasted about two hours. The policeman who was struck was not seriously injured.
