A 6-year-old boy woke two adults early Thursday and allowed them to escape a fire that destroyed their home.
Kansas City, Kan., firefighters responded to an alarm just after 4 a.m. in the 2000 block of South 42nd Street and found heavy fire at a one-story residence. Fire crews had the blaze under control within 30 minutes.
Though one dog escaped, a second was found dead inside.
Fire investigators estimated the loss at $65,000. Also damaged were five vehicles and a personal watercraft, worth perhaps $30,000.
Emergency personnel assisted the family before the arrival of American Red Cross representatives.
The adults told investigators the boy woke them, alerting them to the fire.
