A 65-year-old man died Tuesday after his truck smashed into a semi parked at the Matfield Green Service Area along the Kansas Turnpike, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.
Master Trooper Chris Markham said the man was driving a Chevy S-14 at “near highway speeds” when he pulled into the entrance of the northbound service area and struck a post before slamming into the big rig around 9 p.m.
The man – identified Wednesday as John Cecil Armintrout of Bee Branch, Ark. – died at the scene. He was alone in the truck.
Markham said early Wednesday morning that investigators think impairment or a medical condition may be to blame for the crash. Authorities are also investigating what role speed may have played, Markham said. The speed limit on the turnpike in that area is 75 mph.
A man in his 50s was asleep inside of the parked semi when the collision occurred, Markham said. He was not hurt.
According to the Kansas Turnpike’s Twitter feed, several emergency vehicles responded to the service area Tuesday after the crash. Drivers were asked to use caution.
The Matfield Green Service Area is located about 20 miles north of El Dorado.
