We’re fairly certain that supermodel Gisele Bundchen, wife of NFL quarterback Tom Brady, didn’t expect this kind of backlash to her Instagram photo.
On Tuesday, she posted a photo of herself breastfeeding her 1-year-old daughter, Vivian, while having three people work on her hair, makeup and nails before a photo shoot.
“What would I do without this beauty squad after the 15 hours flying and only 3 hours of sleep #multitasking#gettingready.”
The photo quickly stirred debate among moms, some attacking her for the post and others defending her.
“I think breastfeeding is a very personal thing,” Denise Albert, co-creator of TheMoms.com, told ABC News on Wednesday. “And for her to put this on Instagram while she’s getting her hair and make-up done is a little outrageous, and I think obnoxious.”
Notes one commenter on The Huffington Post, where Lisa Belkin wrote a column called “If Only All Moms Could Breastfeed Like Gisele
”: “I think most women would breast feed for a year if they could get their hair, make-up, and nails done at the same time too. Bet that isn't awkward at all for her ‘team.’”
Wrote another commenter at Elle.com: “Let's just applaud her not being ashamed to post this pic. We need to normalize breastfeeding.”
This isn’t the first time Gisele has raised hackles on the issue of breastfeeding. She’s been very clear in the past about her feelings on the topic.
After the birth of her first child, Benjamin, in 2010, she told Harper's Bazaar UK that “breastfeeding really helped” her get her figure back.
"Some people here (in the U.S.) think they don't have to breastfeed, and I think, 'Are you going to give chemical food to your child, when they are so little?' There should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months."
She got slammed for her comments and later apologized. “I'm not here to judge. ... I think as mothers we are all just trying our best," she said.
But obviously some mommies have more help than others in trying to do their “best.”
“The small part of me is green with envy because I live in the United States where maternity leave is a joke and where most women who have 1-year-olds and are still breastfeeding are at the office with a pump attached to their chests like some bizarre medieval torture device/elaborate S sex toy,” writes Jessica Grose atelle.com
“Celebrities post photographs like this as a way to humanize themselves to their fans ... But this particular photograph shows how absurd that fantasy is. Yes, Gisele is breastfeeding her child like millions of women do every day. But the circumstances surrounding that act for Gisele are unfortunately anything but common.”
