Two young boys were killed Tuesday when a fast-moving fire swept through a small residence in rural Orrick, Mo.
The fire at 9634 Shach Creek Road, near Route O, was reported at 12:20 p.m. The house was fully engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived at the western Ray County property, said Orrick Fire Chief Mike Arnold.
The victims were found in a bedroom.
Randy Garrison, the boys’ father, told broadcast reporters Tuesday night that they were 3-year-old Roger and 1-year-old Ashton. Garrison said his older boy was named after an uncle who also died in a house fire.
Garrison said he returned home from work at 6 a.m. Tuesday and went to bed. He awoke to the sounds of his sons screaming and flames throughout the house. He said he tried to get to the boys, but “I fell over a bungee cord or something that was keeping their bedroom door shut.”
Garrison said he ran out of the house and tried to force his way into the bedroom from the exterior but could not.
“Don’t look at me as a bad father,” he told reporters. “I’m not a bad father. My kids were everything to me.”
Investigators did not know the cause of the fire or where it started, Arnold said.
