The Tivoli Cinemas in Westport has reached its goal of raising $130,000 — 11 days before the deadline for its campaign drive.
“It’s great. It’s incredible,” said owner Jerry Harrington. “We’ve all been kind of celebrating.”
With 35mm film on the way out, the art-house theater needs to upgrade two of its three auditoriums from film to digital projection (the first was converted last year), at a cost of $70,000 per screen.
The Tivoli resorted to Kickstarter, the crowd-funding website, launching its campaign Oct. 30 with the ominous tag line “Go digital or go dark.”
The campaign doesn’t officially end until the end of the day Dec. 11, “so we’re encouraging people to contribute to Kickstarter because it’s going to cost $140,000. But if we reached $130,000, we knew we could do it.”
Harrington says he hopes to have the new equipment installed by the end of the month.
