Kansas City police on Thursday identified a man shot to death on a sidewalk in the old Northeast area as Jacob L. Hendren, 30.

Hendren was with relatives when they dropped him and another relative off in a residential area for an errand Wednesday evening, police said. The driver told police she heard gunshots, but could not find Hendren. She drove around, then called police for help. Officers found Hendren’s body the 300 block of Cypress Avenue.

Hendren previously lived in Harrisonville, but it was unclear where he was living recently, police said. He has relatives who live in Kansas City. He had worked earlier this year at a machine shop.

Police, who were called to the scene about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, were still trying to determine Thursday why relatives dropped him off, what preceded the shooting and who shot him.
