Chiefs starting defensive end Mike DeVito, who suffered a knee sprain in the team’s 27-17 loss to Denver, won’t play Sunday against San Diego because of an injury, coach Andy Reid announced Friday.
Backup end Allen Bailey, who has been used as a pass-rush specialist, logged the majority of the snaps in DeVito’s absence against the Broncos and appears to be the odds-on favorite to start, though Reid offered no hints Friday.
“He’ll have a chance to play a little bit,” Reid said.
Starting right tackle Eric Fisher also did not practice Friday. He is listed as doubtful on the injury report, clearing the way for second-year pro Donald Stephenson to take his place.
Tyson Jackson, the Chiefs’ other starting defensive end, is also listed on the injury report because of a strained abdomen. Like starting right guard Jon Asamoah, who has a shoulder injury, Jackson was a full participant in practice Friday but is listed as questionable to play Sunday.
“It’s a day-by-day process, I’ll see how I feel come game time,” Jackson said. “But I’ll try to put myself in a position where I can help my team out.”
If he can’t, backup defensive end Mike Catapano and recently-signed defensive end Kyle Love could be in line for more work. The 27-year-old Love, who started the 2012 Super Bowl for the New England Patriots, joined the team as a free agent Tuesday and said Friday he’s been getting most of his work at nose tackle with the first-team and second-team defenses in practice.
“I got a good amount of reps with the first-team squad, they’re trying to work me in,” Love said. “I feel right at home, man … they make me feel real comfortable around here. I’ll definitely be ready (Sunday).”
Jackson said Love, who was cut by the Patriots in May and the Jaguars in September, has made an early impression.
“He’s an experienced player, he’s been around a winning system for a long time,” Jackson said. “You can tell by the way he plays ball, his technique is outstanding. He’s gonna be a great help to us.”
Defensive back Sanders Commings (shoulder), linebacker Derrick Johnson (wrist), defensive end Mike Catapano (ankle), tight end Anthony Fasano (knee/ankle) and fullback Anthony Sherman (knee) are all listed as probable.
For the Chargers, offensive tackle King Dunlap (neck) is listed as out, while linebacker Jarret Johnson (hand) is questionable. Cornerback Johnny Patrick (concussion) and receiver Eddie Royal (toe) are questionable, while receiver Vincent Brown (shoulder), safety Jahleel Addae (ankle), receiver Keenan Allen (knee), defensive end Lawrence Guy (toe), center Nick Hardwich (neck), running back Ryan Mathews (hamstring) and linebacker Manti Te’o (elbow) are all probable.
