A 19-year-old Independence woman shot Thursday at a Kansas City, North, motel was found dead Friday morning in Independence.

Police responded to a reported shooting about 10 p.m. Thursday at the Motel 6 at 8230 N.W. Prairie View Road.

When officers arrived, they found what appeared to be a shooting scene, but the people involved had left, including the female victim, Capt. Tye Grant said.

A motel guest told police he heard a gunshot, then saw a woman with a head wound lying on the sidewalk in front of the motel. When the guest ran to the motel office for help, two men fled with the woman in a car.

When the car arrived at North Kansas City Hospital, one man got out to summon help. But then the driver fled with the unresponsive woman, possibly because he saw a police officer approaching and panicked, police said.

Police didn’t know the whereabouts of the woman until the car was discovered about 4 a.m. Friday in the 3500 block of South Jackson Drive in Independence, near Centerpoint Medical Center.

Kansas City and Independence police are investigating the death and the circumstances surrounding the shooting. They are still looking for the driver of the car to determine what happened.

It’s unknown if the woman’s death is a homicide. Police did not release her name.
