A Pleasant Hill man was arraigned Thursday in Cass County Circuit Court on charges that he disposed of a newborn baby’s body by placing it in a blue plastic bucket and filling it with concrete.
Police had gone to Matthew Scroggs’ house Nov. 4 to investigate reports of drugs and a stolen car.
Scroggs, 28, is charged with abandonment of a corpse and tampering with a vehicle. Bond is set at $25,000.
Before their search of the house in the 300 block of Cline Street, police had received information that Scroggs’ wife, Krystal, had given birth to a baby Oct. 7 and that the baby was dead.
During the search, a neighbor advised officers that a blue bucket in the garage could contain evidence. Officers found a blue “feeder type” bucket with rope handles that was filled to the top with new concrete.
Scroggs then told police his wife had given birth to a stillborn baby and he had purchased the concrete, according to court documents. The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy on the child, but the results have not been released.
Four children were in the home, where a small amount of drugs was found. They reportedly are with relatives.
