The Kansas City Star will print USA Today for readers in Kansas City and surrounding areas starting Jan. 20.
The contract, which was announced Friday, covers the Monday through Friday editions of USA Today along with Sports Weekly, a tabloid publication.
USA Today and Sports Weekly are owned by Gannett Co. The Lawrence Journal-World currently prints those products for this area. The other terms of the contract were not disclosed.
“We are proud to partner with USA Today to produce their work on our state-of-the-art presses,” Mi-Ai Parrish, The Star’s president and publisher, said in a statement. “The Kansas City Star’s Press Pavilion is a leader in regional printing, producing more newspapers daily than any other in the area.”
The press plant, at 1601 McGee St., opened in 2006. It houses four high-speed presses that will be running at close to capacity once USA Today and Sports Weekly are added, said Randy Waters, The Star’s vice president of production.
The Star prints about 35 products, including The Wall Street Journal, the Topeka Capital-Journal, The Pitch, Mi Raza and Kansas City Health Wellness. The newspaper recently announced it will begin printing the Lawrence Journal-World on Jan. 14.
