A Johnson County jury has found a 26-year-old Kansas City, Kan., man guilty in a fatal box cutter attack three years ago.

The jury found Maurice Orlando Stewart guilty of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, burglary and theft for the slaying of Stephen Cook, 57, of California.

Olathe police found Cook’s body early June 29, 2010, inside the bathroom of his motel room in the 200 block of East Flaming Road.

Cook had bled to death from numerous cuts, according to an autopsy report. He also had a broken sternum and broken ribs.

Stewart had occupied the room next to Cook.
