Lee’s Summit police chief will retire Jan. 17

Joe Piccinini joined the department in 1983 and has been running the department since Nov. 1, 2007.

Lee’s Summit Police Chief Joe Piccinini announced Thursday that he will retire, effective Jan. 17.

“As I was approaching 30 years as a police officer, obviously I was considering retirement,” Piccinini told The Star’s sister publication, the Lee’s Summit Journal. “There is not really ever a really good time to do it. In talking with my family, we felt like now is a real good time for us and what we’re doing as a family.”

The city said Piccinini joined the department in 1983 as a probationary officer. He was named acting chief on Nov. 1, 2007, and was soon named permanent chief.
