One person was killed and two people were injured Tuesday in a traffic accident in southern Platte County.
Catherine Nienaber, 49, of Kansas City, Kan., was killed.
Platte County authorities have charged Adam Shaw, 38, of Springfield, with involuntary manslaughter and two counts of assault in the accident, which was reported just after 8 a.m. on Missouri 45 and Waldron Road, several miles west of Interstate 435.
Shaw is being held in the Platte County Detention Center on a $250,000 cash bond. Authorities are investigating whether alcohol was a factor.
According to authorities, Shaw was driving a 2013 Freightliner tractor-trailer north on Missouri 45 and crossed into the southbound lanes. The tractor-trailer struck a 2009 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck, forcing that vehicle off the road, said Sgt. Jerin Almond of the Platte County sheriff’s office.
The tractor-trailer then struck a 2006 Toyota Sienna, killing Nienaber, the driver. Her 7-year-old son, a passenger in the minivan, was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the pickup, a 52-year-old man from Atchison, Kan., also was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
