A Lawrence man died Tuesday when a van sideswiped his pickup truck, sending him spinning out of control across the median and into oncoming traffic on Kansas 10.
Randy R. Schimmel, 52, died at a hospital from injuries suffered in the rush-hour crash on Kansas 10 between Renner and Ridgeview roads in Lenexa. Investigators said he was not wearing a seat belt
The crash occurred at 4:50 p.m. as Schimmel was headed east on K-10 in a 1983 Dodge pickup.
According to a preliminary report by the Kansas Highway Patrol:
A 27-year-old Raytown man also was driving east on K-10 when his 2006 Ford passenger van sideswiped Schimmel’s pickup. The crash caused Schimmel’s pickup to spin into westbound traffic.
Then a 2010 Dodge pickup truck driven by a 42-year-old Lenexa man slammed into Schimmel’s driver’s door and a 2001 Lexus driven by a 55-year-old Shawnee woman hit the Dodge’s passenger side.
Schimmel was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
