The Halloween season begins with grief for one Kentucky family as 16-year-old honor student Jordan Morlan accidentally hangs himself while playing a prank on his little sister.
Jordan loved Halloween, according to his mother, Ginger Rodriguez, who told TV stations in Louisville, Kentucky about what happened in her front yard Sunday.
That’s when Jordan, a member of his high school’s ROTC rifle team, tried to scare his sister by pretending to hang from a noose he hung in a tree.
His sister found him and ran into the house, telling her mom that Jordan was hanging in the tree.
"I said well he's probably playing a prank on you because he was pranking us on other things that day putting up Halloween decorations," Rodriguez told station WHAS 11.
"And she said, 'No, he's not moving and he's got drool hanging from his mouth.' I ran out and his back was facing me.”
When Rodriguez found him she couldn’t get him down from the tree.
She couldn’t save him, she said.
Louisville police declared Jordan’s death an accident. The coroner said he became disoriented after slipping the noose around his neck and that he passed out after it tightened.
He was placed on life support at a local hospital and died early Monday, 12 hours after the accident.
His mom is talking about it, she told reporters, so that other parents will warn their kids about pulling pranks and so that no other family will suffer what she has.
