A glider built by a team from Kansas City’s Airline History Museum was airborne longer than many other entries at the Red Bull Flugtag competition on Saturday but it failed to win a prize.
The “Flight of the Connie” team achieved a distance of 42 feet after the craft was pushed off a 30-foot-high deck over Lake Michigan in Chicago. The team had hoped to surpass the record of 207 feet.
The winning entry flew just 39 feet but scored better on creativity and showmanship. An estimated 60,000 people watched 30 teams compete in the Flugtag, which is German for “flying day.”
