After more than a half century at its current Lee’s Summit location, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department is getting a new headquarters.

Well, a different one, anyway.

Rather than renovate its Lee’s Summit headquarters building at a cost of $750,000 and likely more, Sheriff Mike Sharp said it made more sense to buy a 26-year-old building with a better office layout.

That ups the total project cost to $1.2 million, 62 percent above the amount budgeted. But the Jackson County Legislature approved the change Monday 8-0.

The plan calls for paying $920,000 for a two-story, 16,000-square-foot building on just over six acres at 4001 NE Lakewood Way in Lee’s Summit.

The remaining $300,000 would cover the cost of additional parking spaces and minor improvements to the building, according to the proposed ordinance allowing the purchase and additional appropriation.

Built in 1987, the property is now owned by the Blue River Kansas City Baptist Association.

The sheriff’s department plans to move into the building late this year or early in 2014.

Plans call for the parks department to move some operations, including park rangers, into the sheriff’s current headquarters at 3310 Rennau Drive.

While about the same size, Sharp said, that building was not configured for a modern law enforcement operation. For instance, there are no public restrooms due to security concerns.

The new headquarters will have better highway access, he said, and be visible from I-470.
