Kmart started its Christmas season this week and it’s paying for it on its Facebook page, where some shoppers have unloaded on the retailer for pushing the holidays this early.
Kmart started running a commercial for its layaway program, starring a gingerbread man, on Sunday.
That’s more than 100 days before Christmas, in case you’re counting down the days.
“Don't let the holidays sneak up on you. Shop early with Kmart free layaway,” the voice-over in the commercial says.
Shoppers took shots on Kmart’s Facebook page.
“What happened to Halloween and thanksgiving? Stop with the Christmas commercials ALREAY(sic)!!”
“Layaway is fine you just don't need to insert all the Christmas items and words into your ad. It's just disgusting! I guess you'll be advertising Valentines Day in October.”
“Kmart ...this is NOT about helping your customers. What it is about is the corporate big wigs lining their pockets with money that they trick people into spending by starting Christmas shopping earlier and earlier.”
Last year, Kmart ran its first holiday ad right before Halloween, nearly two weeks after Target’s first holiday promotion in mid-October.
A Kmart spokeswoman said the ad was being “tweaked.” No word on what that means.
Not everyone, though, is opposed to Christmas in September.
“I think it is awesome that Kmart is offering Christmas layaway this early, so those that who use it can have more time to pay for their purchases,” wrote one shopper on Facebook.
Wrote another: “I wish people would SHUT UP about ‘It's still summer’ ‘Can we please get Halloween over with..’ Boo FREAKING HOO! All you people complain when it's shopping season: the long lines, the crowds, the prices, how stressed you are, how you don't have enough money. If people would remember they can shop early then they could celebrate the holidays like they should; with family and food!”
