Interstate 670 on the south side of the downtown Kansas City loop will close Friday night for the demolition of the Main Street bridge.
I-670 will close at 8 p.m. Friday and remain closed through 5 a.m. Monday.
The ramps from Broadway to eastbound I-670, from northbound and southbound U.S. 71 to westbound I-670 and from northbound and southbound I-35 to eastbound I-670 will be closed during the weekend work.
Traffic will detour along the north side of the downtown loop.
After the weekend, drivers will find the right lanes of both eastbound and westbound I-670 near the Main Street bridge closed at times for bridge work through Nov. 4.
Although the Main Street bridge has about 10 years left of useful life, Kansas City decided to replace it prior to the opening of the planned streetcar line. The city wanted to avoid disrupting the new system.
The $2.75 million bridge replacement project is expected to be completed in early- to mid-November.
Main Street traffic over I-670 will be rerouted to Oak and Baltimore streets during construction.
The new bridge will include widened sidewalks for pedestrians.
