A gorilla at the Kansas City Zoo gave birth, but the newborn was not full term and did not survive, the zoo announced Tuesday.

The 26-year-old mother, Makari, was brought here last year from the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago to mate with a 30-year-old male, Radi.

Zookeepers on Tuesday morning found Makari with the dead offspring. She has had two successful pregnancies before.

Zoo officials said they are pleased to know that both adults are fertile, and they are hopeful for future pregnancies.
