Heavy smoke billowed from an three-alarm fire at an Overland Park duplex in the 5200 block of West 121st Street early Sunday evening, but nobody was reported injured.
A 911 call indicated that the fire began in a grill on the deck and spread to the wood roof, but the cause is under investigation.
Firefighters had to take a “defensive posture” when the roof began to collapse, said Overland Park Fire Department spokesman Jason Rhodes. Crews re-entered 20 minutes later, and the fire was under control in about an hour. Damage to the duplex was “significant,” Rhodes said.
The Overland Park and Leawood fire departments responded to the blaze. A third alarm was called to provide extra manpower because of Sunday’s excessive heat. Johnson County Med-Act was on hand to check firefighters’ vital signs and return them to the scene.
Embers spread to a home to the north but were quickly extinguished, Rhodes said.
