The Star wins Missouri journalism awards

For the 19th time in 20 years, The Kansas City Star was a top finisher in the Missouri Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest.

The Star was named the Gold Medal newspaper for large daily newspapers.

The awards were presented Saturday at the Missouri Press Association’s convention in Kansas City.

The Star won first-place awards in 18 categories, including best front page, editorial and coverage of community/people/lifestyles.

Other first-place awards:

Mike McGraw and Alan Bavley, best business story and also news or feature series; Dave Eames and McGraw for information graphic; Donald Bradley for outdoors story; Cindy Hoedel for serious columnist; Glenn E. Rice, Sam Mellinger, Randy Covitz, Adam Teicher, Sam McDowell and Pete Grathoff for breaking news story; Jill Wendholt Silva, Hoedel, Mary G. Pepitone, Tammy Ljungblad and Barbara Hill-Meyer for special section; Kent Babb, Mellinger and Terez A. Paylor for sports news story or package; John Sleezer for sports photo; Mellinger for sports columnist; Dave Helling, Steve Kraske, Diane Stafford, Lynn Horsley and Jason Hancock for coverage of government; Neil Nakahodo for page design; Keith Myers for photo package; Don Munday and Chick Howland for headline writing; Christine Vendel for news story.

Second-place awards:

Staff for coverage of rural life or agriculture; David Eulitt for news photo; Joe Robertson for education story; staff for editorial pages and for editorials; Keith Myers for photo illustration; Christine Vendel for news or feature series and also for community service; Brent Frazee for outdoors story; Sarah Gish for feature story; Donald Bradley for rural life or agriculture story and also history story; staff for special section; Robin Langdon, Jan Dumay and Mike Fitzgerald for ad idea-promotion of an advertiser; Glenn E. Rice, Sam Mellinger, Randy Covitz, Adam Teicher, Sam McDowell and Pete Grathoff, news story or package; Kent Babb for sports feature story; Allison Long for photo package; staff for general excellence and also for Newspaper in Education program.

Christine Vendel for investigative reporting; Mark Morris and Brian Burnes for news or feature series; Eric Hibbeler, Neil Nakahodo and Sharon Hoffmann for information graphic; Brent Frazee for outdoors story; staff for special section, sports pages, local business coverage and newspaper design; Laura Bauer and Mará Rose Williams, community service; Judy L. Thomas, business story; Barbara Hill-Meyer and Tammy Ljungblad, page design; Mark Morris, Thomas and Lynn Horsley for religion story.
