They failed to get it done Friday night for the second straight game, so you have to wonder. You can’t fault Alex Smith’s effort in this one. He threw to Baldwin three times, but he couldn’t get open twice and he dropped the other one. Bowe had one pass come is way and he was open, but a 49ers defender managed to get into the passing lane and break up the throw. Smith threw 16 passes but the Chiefs had just 45 net passing yards in the first half. That yards-per-attempt average is horrible.
•How much did the Chiefs miss Jamaal Charles?
A lot. Smart decision by the Chiefs to keep Charles and his injured foot out of uniform in a meaningless preseason game but he demonstrated his value to the Chiefs in his absence. The Chiefs had to use two players (Knile Davis on running downs, Cyrus Gray on passing downs) to make up for his loss and neither one could do it adequately. Davis did a poor job of pass protecting when the Chiefs threw when he was in the game, while Gray dropped a third-down pass to kill a drive.
•Who is the Chiefs star of the preseason halfway through?
How about a coach, special-teams coordinator Dave Toub? The Chiefs have been lifeless on returns for two seasons, but they delivered two big returns for the second straight week. Quintin Demps returned a kickoff 104 yards for the only first-half touchdown and Devon Wylie had a 52-yard punt return in the third quarter. The Chiefs gave a play back to the 49ers in the third quarter when, with the backups in the game, they allowed San Francisco’s Parys Haralson to come unblocked and get a hand on a Dustin Colquitt punt.
•What should we make of the Chiefs on defense?
Hard to say because the 49ers yanked quarterback Colin Kaepernick after just one possession. The Chiefs starters played the first half and were hardly dominant. They lost containment on three plays, each of which the 49ers turned into long gains. Still, some big games by individual defenders can’t be ignored. Justin Houston, Eric Berry and Dontari Poe were all excellent and Sean Smith had an interception.
