Missouri kidnapping suspect found dead in Wyco jail cell

The death of Elijah McPike, 23, appears to be a suicide, jail officials said.

A man charged in the alleged kidnapping of a teenage Missouri girl was found dead in his Wyandotte County jail cell Tuesday night.

The Wyandotte County sheriff’s office said the death of 23-year-old Elijah McPike appeared to be a suicide, but an autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office said cell checks are done every hour at the jail. McPike was last checked at 7:33 p.m. Tuesday. He was found by a deputy at 8:24 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.

Kansas City, Kan., police arrested McPike Friday night and found the 15-year-old girl he allegedly kidnapped Thursday in Harrison County, Mo. Prosecutors there had charged McPike with kidnapping and violation of a protection order.

He was being held in Wyandotte County pending his extradition to Missouri.
