A former Cass County sheriff’s deputy has been charged with a sex crime involving a 14-year-old girl in Belton.
Maxwell F. Blanchard Jr., 41, was charged Tuesday with first-degree child molestation. On Wednesday, prosecutors filed an amended complaint charging him with second-degree statutory sodomy.
According to court records, police were called after the girl’s mother discovered sexually explicit text messages.
The girl later confirmed to police that the messages were between her and Blanchard and that he had inappropriately touched her, according to the allegations.
Blanchard was arrested Monday by Belton police, who identified him as a sheriff’s deputy at the time of the crimes. His employment was terminated Monday, sheriff’s office officials said.
Because of Blanchard’s law enforcement position, the office of Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker has been appointed as special prosecutor in the case.
